Herb butter is an essential part of a proper steak, grilled baguette, or new potatoes! We’ll show you how you can make a simple herb butter yourself from just a few ingredients.
Before you reach for a finished product from the refrigerated shelf, take a quick look to see whether you already have the following ingredients at home: Herbs? Butter? Perfect! Then you already have everything you need for a really tasty, homemade herb butter. You can’t go wrong with our basic recipe, but you can swap herbs and spices as you please!
Make herbal butter yourself – the basic recipe
- 1 bunch of fresh herbs, for example, parsley, basil, chives, chervil
- 1 clove of garlic
- 250 g soft butter
Make herb butter yourself – this is how it works
- Wash herbs, shake dry, and finely chop. Peel the garlic and also finely chop it.
- Put butter, herbs, and garlic in a bowl and knead with a fork. Important: The butter must be really soft for this, so take it out of the refrigerator at a good time!
- Season the herb butter with salt. Cover and chill until serving.
Tip: Shape the herb butter into a roll
You can of course serve the herb butter straight from the bowl. Or shape the finished butter into a roll. You can easily cut individual slices from this, which can then melt on your steak …
It’s that easy: Put the soft herb butter on a sheet of baking paper and shape it into an even roll with your hands. Wrap the herb butter in the paper and let it set in the refrigerator. Finished!
Make herb butter from wild herbs yourself
You can also use fresh wild herbs for delicious herb butter. In spring, for example, it tastes great with wild garlic, and a little mustard seed rounds off the butter perfectly. Try our recipe for wild garlic mustard butter.

How long can herb butter keep?
Store homemade herb butter in a butter or food storage container or roll it in the baking paper as described above. This way it can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
Can you freeze herb butter?
Herbal butter is great to prepare and freeze in large quantities. To do this, roll the herb butter in baking paper and wrap the roll tightly with aluminum foil or an oilcloth. Store in the freezer for a maximum of 10 months.
For a better portion, you can also put the herb butter in ice cube molds and freeze it. So you can remove individual small cubes of herb butter as needed.
